Jerry lived a long, fruitful life full of friends, family, and adventures. He grew up outside of Milford, NE and graduated from Seward High School. He trained in computer technology at an IBM trade school in Chicago. He moved to Arlington, VA to work in the computer operations department of Brown-Forman Distillery. After moving back to Lincoln, he started working for the State of Nebraska, including the University of Nebraska, where he retired as Director of Operations of the Computer Services Network in 2003 after over 30 years of service.
Jerry enjoyed many different activities. Shortly after moving back to Nebraska he purchased a 1962 Chevy Impala SS and won many local drag racing competitions. He had his private pilot license and flew recreationally in the early 70’s. He enjoyed many outdoor activities. Boating, fishing, and golfing in the summers while snowmobiling and skiing in the winter. He was a Nebraska football fan and season ticket holder since the late 1960’s. He was an avid gardener and took great pride in growing all the ingredients for his homemade salsa. He spent his early years of retirement riding his Harley Davidson venturing as far as western Montana one summer. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and helped build them a playset and fort.
Jerry is survived by his three sons, Jerod (Linda), Justin (Christine), and Josh Burkey; three grandchildren, Blake, Elle, and Bennett Burkey; sisters, Wanda Hamilton, and Carolyn Smith. He was preceded in death by his parents, Helen, and Milton Burkey; brother James Burkey.
