James William Morris was born December 18, 1939 in Nebraska. His parents were Jack and Martha Morris. Growing up, his family were members of Bethany Christian Church. On April 7, 1961, he married the love of his life Saundra Sovereign, beginning a marriage that would span sixty-one years. Jim joined the U.S. Navy where he trained in California and Tennessee and served at Chase Field in Texas, before being discharged from active duty in 1963.
He had many jobs throughout the years, ranging from building garages with Hood Lumber Co. to working as a Bridge Designer II with the Department of Roads. He did a variety of other work in his spare time in parts stores and including helping to raise money for the Children’s Zoo and volunteering as a Board of Director for the Knights Court Homeowners Association for several years.
Throughout the years, Jim and his longtime friend Andy Eglite shared an interest in aviation. Together they experienced many flights in vintage WWII aircrafts along with attending the Blue Angels airshow. Jim also shot trap at the Isaac Walton Club in the Industrial League, a hobby he also happily involved his son. He enjoyed old cars, even working on restoring a 1967 El Camino, WWII history, antiques, learning new things, going to the gym, and gardening in his and Saundra’s yard until he was no longer able. He was a lifetime member of the National Riflemen and even donated a gun to the Berlin Museum in Germany.
Jim was a kind soul who always enjoyed helping others. He helped his wife around the house, including doing his own laundry, grocery shopping, taking his son grocery shopping and to his appointments. He would help his neighbors when they were in distress. He also helped a former classmate and neighbor after he was struggling with muscular dystrophy. If there was someone who needed help, Jim was there!
In 2014, Jim was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease and sought treatment. Jim passed away on March 3, 2023 at their assisted living apartment at Aviva Woodlands.
