Ione attended Burwell Public School and in 1951 at age 17, having just finished Normal Training in high school, began teaching school in a one-room schoolhouse in the sand hills at Burwell. She attended Kearney State Teacher's College and received a two-year teaching certificate. She then taught 4th grade in Grand Island in 1953 and 1954. Harry and Ione were married August 24, 1952 in Burwell and Harry (who was in the Army) was sent to Germany for two years. They were married for 62 years. Ione earned her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Nebraska. Ione was one of the last teachers to get a Permanent Lifetime Teaching certificate in 1958. She was a member of NEA, NSEA, LEA, and honorary life member of Nebraska Parents and Teachers Association during her 40-year career teaching and retired from Lincoln Public Schools in 1998.
Ione loved teaching, but enjoyed her retirement years by traveling to all 50 states and 35 foreign countries, reading, square dancing, crafts, crocheting, playing cards and most of all, doing things with her family.
She was a member of Moose Lodge, VFW Auxiliary, Crounse Friendship Club, three square dance clubs, camping group, and the Pinochle Group. She did volunteer work at Matt Talbot. She was a member of St. David's Episcopal Church where she belonged to the Altar Guild and Lydia's Circle. Ione was a lector, acolyte, Junior Warden and Eucharistic Minister.
Ione is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Ray Wilson, son and daughter-in-law, Jerry and Cindy Hieter; grandchildren, John Wilson, Jennifer Wilson, and Janelle (Nate) Camp; great-grandchildren, Jordinn Wilson, Jenna Wilson, Marlon Rupert (Rome), Caitlyn, Thomas, and Maya Camp; along with cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. She is preceded in death by her husband, Harry Hieter; and brother, Robert Davis.
A memorial service for Ione will be held Saturday, March 29, 2025 at 10:00 AM at St. David's Episcopal Church, 8800 Holdrege St., Lincoln, NE. The family has requested no flowers and in lieu of flowers, donations can be given to St. David's Episcopal Church or Alzheimer's Association of Nebraska.
