Glen C. Houtz, 85, died October 3, 2018, at his home in Lincoln. Visitation will be at Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home on Monday, Oct. 8, 6-8 p.m. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Oct. 9, at 10 a.m. at Heartlands Church at 10000 Yankee Hill Road in Lincoln. Burial will be at Fort McPherson National Cemetery near Maxwell at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 10. Glen was born on January 13, 1933, to Ike and Mabel Houtz in Madrid, NE. He graduated from Madrid High School and earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Kearney State Teacher’s College. He was a teacher and coach at high schools in Brule, Venango, Sidney, Hastings, and Superior, Nebraska. He also taught at Hastings College. He married his high school sweetheart, Barbara Nelson, in December of 1954. They raised four daughters together and had been married for 55 years when she died in 2009. He married Kathi Richter in 2011. Vocal music was an important part of Glen’s life and he and Kathi enjoyed singing together in the Lincoln Senior Chorus. They also had fun on road trips to Nebraska landmarks and loved sharing Saturday waffles at The Harbor. Glen was an active member of the Church of Christ and Heartlands Church. He was a member of the Fort Sidney Colonels chorus and Kiwanis Clubs in Sidney and Lincoln. He was a church song leader, a voracious reader, a fierce Husker fan, and a talented photographer. He captured the experience of growing up in a small Nebraska town in his sweet and funny memoir, “Bending the Twig.”He is survived by his wife, Kathi; his four daughters, Lisa (Mark) Burham, Julie (Andrew) Wallace, Lori Mills, all of Lincoln, and Mary Jo (Steve) Chatelain of North Platte; his grandchildren Jared (Michelle) Burham, Caleb, Ethan and Joel Burham, Max, Jack and Wil Chatelain, Gavin Wallace, Maggie (Brett) Sales, Brett (Molly) Mills, Jeff Mills; great grandchildren Leah and Addison Mills and Beau Sales. Glen will be remembered for leading family singalongs in the car and making us all laugh with his self-deprecating sense of humor. We will also remember his grace as he dealt with the losses of Alzheimer’s Disease.
