David Carlton Sundberg was born October 25, 1940, in Red Wing, MN, the son of Harold and Lillian (Anderson) Sundberg. He was their late-in-life surprise, the much younger sibling to Jane Ann, Robert, and Harold Jr. David loved growing up in his beautiful Mississippi River town, graduating from Red Wing High School in 1958. His childhood was scarred by the passing of his mother when he was only 13. His father remarried a family friend, Nell McMillan, who, along with his older siblings, tried to help him cope with the loss of his mother.
Following high school, Dave moved to Lincoln where he attended the University of Nebraska on a football scholarship. Although a knee injury kept Dave from playing his sport, he continued his coursework, his ROTC participation, and activities with his fraternity brothers at Sigma Alpha Epsilon. It was during this time that he met his sweetheart, Linda Joyce, and the two were married October 13, 1961. A year later, Dave graduated with a bachelor’s in economics and was commissioned as second lieutenant in the United States Army. His five years of active duty were spent as a pilot in the United States, Germany, and Vietnam. During that time he attained the rank of Captain and logged 1900 hours of flying time, including 350 combat hours.
Upon separation from active duty in 1967, Dave joined his family in Lincoln and began his successful and fulfilling life insurance career with Massachusetts Mutual. He obtained many professional certifications and designations, earning a plethora of industry and personal achievement awards. Dave enjoyed providing his clients with peace of mind and delivering on the promises of life insurance during his 45 years of service.
Dave was an active family man and the proud father to the three children born to his marriage with Linda: son Craig (& Nancy Whitcomb) of Lincoln; and daughters Amy (& Marty Mincer) of Hamburg, IA, and Wendy (& Patrick Kuhl) of Lincoln. His family tree boasts eight grandchildren: Aaron Sundberg (Amber), Brett Sundberg (Jenny) and Elizabeth Sundberg Kremer (Ross); Wesley McCord, Anna McCord Johnson (Joel) and Jackson McCord (fiancé Hailey Davidson); Nick Kuhl (deceased) and Natasha Kuhl Lorenson (Brett). He was also known as great-grandpa to Kristofer Bogue, Lily Lorenson, Shane Lorenson, Colin Sundberg, Teddy Sundberg and Emma Sundberg.
Dedicated not only to his family but also to community service, Dave shared his time and talents throughout the decades with all of the following (the list is extensive although not exhaustive): Lincoln Association of Life Underwriters, Million Dollar Round Table, National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors, Lions Club, South Lincoln Track Club, Lincoln General Hospital/Bryan Memorial Hospital, Lincoln Midget Football, Lincoln Jaycees, Lincoln Estate Planning Council, American Heart Association, Special Olympics, Madonna Foundation, People’s City Mission, Young Life, Lincoln Crisis Pregnancy Center, Jim Ager Junior Golf Course, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Lincoln Independent Business Association, University of Nebraska Foundation, United Way, and most recently Meals on Wheels. Dave was a well-respected and sought-after community servant and fundraiser. He served as president/chairman to many of these organizations. He was also a dedicated member of First Evangelical Free Church.
When he wasn’t serving his family and community, Dave enjoyed golfing, hunting, walking his last of three wonderful Golden Retrievers (Duke), snow skiing, and many wonderful travel opportunities. He was also an avid people watcher and extrovert extraordinaire.
Left to cherish Dave’s memory are his wife, children, grandchildren, and many other family and friends.
The family wishes memorials to the People's City Mission or to Pregnancy Center of Lincoln.
