David spent his entire life living in Lincoln. He would tell stories to his children and grandchildren about all the fun he had growing up here. The early years were spent in the North Bottoms neighborhood before he and his family moved to the Capital Beach area. He attended Garfield country school, Everett Jr. High, and Lincoln High School. He went on to graduate from UNL in 1966 with a degree in Accounting.
After graduating from college David found his calling protecting the financial interests of the people of Nebraska working for the Nebraska Department of Insurance for 40 years. He first held the position as an Examiner then became the youngest Chief Examiner in the department’s history. A position that he held until he retired in May of 2006. David also graciously served as a member of the Nebraska Air National Guard from August 1965 until retiring in October 1987. During his time in the Air Guard, he made many lifelong friends.
David married his life partner, Kathleen Brt, on May 6, 1967. This is the girl he told his mom he was going to wait for when he first saw her walking down the street. David and Kathleen were blessed with three children.
He was a generous and caring man who loved to sing along with the radio, attend church services, tell stories about his adventures as an examiner and all the time he spent with his buddies in the Air Guard. In his forties he found a passion for golf which he shared with his wife. He played as much as he could throughout the years enjoying rounds at the Lincoln public courses every week and taking golf trips with his wife and friends. David also enjoyed all his beautiful trees and feeding all the birds around.
David is survived by wife Kathleen, children Lisa (Ruhnke) and husband Josh, Kimberly, and Michael and his wife Melissa along with seven grandchildren: Megan and Matthew McKay, Connor, Averee and Macy Krumm and Peyton and Carter Ruhnke. David was so very proud of these grandchildren and all of them held a very special place in his heart. We will all miss him so much.
