Bernice Beals was born on July 10, 1932. She was one of ten children born to Leo and Christine Wenzl of Steinauer, Nebraska. She grew up on the family farm and graduated from Steinauer High School in 1949. Vickie, Dave, Jerry, and Lori were born during her marriage to David Wolken of Tecumseh. Lori, who had cerebral palsy, held a special place in Bernice’s heart. Bernice spent most of her adult life in Lincoln to be near Lori and help with her care. Bernice had a wonderful sense of humor and loved spending time with family and friends. She was always quick to visit and offer help in times of need. If you dropped by her home, you most likely found her working on the Sunday crossword or a challenging jigsaw puzzle. A true bargain shopper at heart, Bernice loved garage sales. Her “I brake for garage sale” bumper sticker was not just a saying, but a warning to other motorists on the road. She was renowned for her peanut brittle, a frequent request every holiday season. The recipe she perfected was a source of pride for Bernice. Bernice died at home surrounded by family on Oct. 8. She looked forward to being with Lori who passed away in 2013. She is survived by children Vickie & Roger Wenzl, Lincoln; Dave & Karen Wolken, Tecumseh; Jerry & Jeanne Wolken, Lincoln; grandchildren Russ (Allison) Wenzl, Adam Wenzl, Kellen Heideman, Matt (Alejandra) Urkoski, Derek (Christina) Wolken, Brittany, Kaci, and Kale Wolken; great-grandchildren Skylar, Noah, Madyson, Natalie Wenzl and Reece Wolken.
