Theodore Joseph “Ted” Winter, 87, of Lima passed away at 8:44 p.m., Thursday evening, June 15, 2017 at Lima Memorial Health Systems. He was born September 9, 1929 in Lima to Day Walter and Jennie M. (Sowers) Winter and they preceded him in death. On July 4, 1959, he married Alice Marie Zanotti and she survives.
He was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church, Lima. He graduated from St. John’s High School, Lima in 1948 where he had been a tremendous pitcher; he received his Bachelor’s degree from O.N.U. in 1959 and his Master’s degree from Indiana University. He was a lifelong educator teaching Industrial Arts at Lafayette-Jackson High School, Perry High School and retired in 1981 from Bath High School where he also taught Electric/Electronics after 19 years of service. At Lafayette-Jackson he coached softball, freshman basketball and freshman football. While at Bath, he coached freshman basketball, golf and he was the faculty manager. He formerly was a member of the Elks and the Eagles both in Lima. He was a veteran serving in the U.S. Air Force during the time of the Korean Conflict. He was a member of an archery club and he participated in their tournaments.
He will always be remembered as a loving husband and an all-around wonderful person with many interests. He was admired by everyone that knew him.
Ted and Alice Marie hosted two exchange students, Vicky Monpanbanua-Vargas and Shirley Lavaro Beach. A brother, Wallace L. (Phyllis) Winter of Franklin, OH, survives him, as do numerous nieces and nephews and a cousin, John (Adrene) Pellegrini.
He was preceded in death by the following siblings, Mike, Donna Pohlabel, Leo, Larry, Constance, Donald, Lois Lambert and Nancy.
Alice would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Lima Memorial Health System and the special caregivers, Julie, Jenny, Bob and Ronny and all who have helped over the years whenever needed.
Mass of Christian burial will begin at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 20, 2017 at St. John Catholic Church 777 S Main Street Lima, with Father David Ross as celebrant. Burial will follow in Gethsemani Cemetery, with military rites by V.F.W. Post 1275 and the U.S. Air Force Honor Guard.
Calling hours will be Monday, June 19 from 2-8 p.m. at SIFERD-ORIANS FUNERAL HOME.
