.Paul E. Scholfield, 89, of Elida, died at 8:40 p.m., Monday, at St. Rita’s Hospice. He was born May 2, 1921, in Lima, to Charlie and Katie (McClain) Scholfield who preceded him in death. On May 23, 1946, he married his sweetheart, Helen M. Driver, who was his wife for over 64 years.
Mr. Scholfield was a retiree from Westinghouse. He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving as a staff sergeant during World War II, in the CBI (China-Burma-India) Theater. He was a councilman for the Village of Elida, from 1969 until 1973, serving as Council President in his last year. He then became Mayor of Elida in 1973 filling an unexpired term and was elected to three more terms serving until 1988. He was also a floral designer at Mohler’s Flowers. In 1989 he became a volunteer at Lima Memorial Health Systems and in 1992, became treasurer of the LMHS Gift Shop. He was a member of V.F.W. Post 1275, Lima and a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, Elida.
Also surviving are four children: Cathy (Ralph) Knauer of Cincinnati, Michael (Lynn) Scholfield of Lima, Debi Scholfield of Columbus and Rick Scholfield of Lima; grandchildren: Brett Knauer of Cincinnati, Jodi (Matthew) Darlage of Alexandria, VA, Lori (Phillip) Fricks of Cicero, IN and Jenifer (Steve) Smith of New Haven, IN. He is also survived by Julia Gable of Bluffton and a sister-in-law Jeanne Scholfield of Wirtz, VA and many loving nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a brother, George Scholfield and a sister, Pauline (Karl) Gable.
Funeral services will begin at 11:00 a.m., Friday, at Siferd-Orians Funeral Home, with Rev. James Kuhn officiating. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery, Elida, with military graveside rites by V.F.W. Post 1275. Visitation will be on Thursday from 3-7 p.m. at the funeral home.
