92, of Lima, died at 7:15 a.m. May 21, 2013, at his residence surrounded by his children.
He was born December 16, 1920, in Bedford, Indiana to John and Lillie (Clouse) Burgess. On April 7, 1947 he married Mary Sciranka who preceded him in death on March, 20, 2008.
Carl was a member of St. Gerard Catholic Church, Lima, Ohio. He was a World War II Army Veteran and member of VFW Post #1275. He retired from Ex-cello Corp. in 1983.
He came to Lima looking for work and found the love of his life, Mary. Carl loved his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren with simple, honest and unconditional love. He had the wonderful gift of making you feel like you were the most important person in the world.
He was a passionate Indiana University basketball, Notre Dame football and Cleveland Browns fan. He also loved fishing, golf and gardening. All of his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren shared his passion for all of the above.
Carl was also a beloved Uncle and Great Uncle to many and will be missed by those family members as well.
Survivors include a son Tim (Sharon) Burgess of Lima, five daughters, Carole (Tom) Zeller of Lima, Barb (Jon) Green, Columbus, Ohio, Mary Ann (Bill) Sommer of Lima, Teresa Frost of Lima, Lou Ann (Kelly) Reid of Elida, Ohio; 14 grandchildren, Rick Zeller, Lisa Zeller, Brent (Kathlene) Burgess, Jessica (Jason) Uhrik, Tony (Erin) Sommer, Mary Elizabeth Sommer, Jonathan Sommer, Jeff (Peggy) Frost, Carla Williams, Ryan Frost, Erica (Chad) Elling, Jennifer Reid, Adam Reid, Stephen Reid and 28 great grandchildren; a sister-in-law Carol Sciranka, of Lima, Ohio; one sister Margaret Lowery of Bedford, Indiana, one brother Asa Burgess of Bedford, Indiana.
Carl was preceded in death by his parents John and Lillie Burgess, 2 sisters, Phyllis Burgess (infant) and Luella Casey and 3 brothers, Charles Burgess (infant), Robert Burgess and John Howard Burgess all of Bedford, Indiana. He was also preceded in death by grandson Byron Burgess.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Friday, May 24, 2013 at St. Gerard Catholic Church with Father Mike Houston as celebrant, burial will follow in Gethsemani Cemetery where VFW Post 1275 will have graveside military rites..
Family and Friends may call Thursday 2-8 p.m. at Siferd-Orians Funeral Home 506 N. Cable Rd. Lima, Ohio.
