Alonzo Jenkins, Sr., 72, of Lima, passed away at 1:00 a.m., Friday, June 28, 2013, at his residence. He was born March 21, 1941, in Ft. Pierce, Florida, to Earlie & Ira Lee (McGriff) Jenkins who preceded him in death. On June 24, 1978, he married Martia Kelley who survives.
Also surviving are ten children: Patricia Bloodson, Deanna Jenkins, Antoinette Jenkins, Napoleon Jenkins, Demetrius Jenkins and Shenika Jenkins all of Detroit, Alicia (Damion) Tate of Columbus, James (Nicole) Millner of Lima, Anthony (Shonda) Millner of Columbus and Aaron (Crystal) Jenkins of Lima; a brother: Charles (Linda) Jenkins of Lima and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a son, Alonzo Jenkins, Jr., a brother, Ellis Jenkins, and two sisters, Lillie Mae Cunningham and Minnie Long.
Alonzo had worked many years, first at Ford Motor Company and then at A.A.P. He was a hard worker and would do anything for anyone, putting others before himself, even during his illness. He loved basketball, especially the Lakers and the Ohio State Buckeyes. He loved to sing, particularly Gospel music and was a member of the Gospel Sensations group. He was an amazing, one of a kind man and was loved by a multitude of family and friends. He was known by many names, such as “Pops”, “Poppy”, “Zo” and “PawPaw” and somewhat famous for his many sayings.
The family wishes to extend their sincere gratitude to the nurses and S.T.N.A.s who made his life comfortable to the end.
Services will begin at 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, July 3, 2013, at Mt. Olivet Church of God in Christ, with his uncle, Pastor Clarence McGriff officiating. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery.
Family and friends may visit at the church Wednesday, from 11:00 a.m. until the time of services.
