Gerald Timothy (Tim) Smith was born on July 2, 1946 in Milledgeville, GA to Billy R. and Martha Champion Smith. He grew up in Milledgeville and graduated from Baldwin County High School where he played cornet in the band.
Tim went to Georgia Tech on the Co-Op Program and received Bachelor of Civil Engineering, Master of Science in Sanitary Engineering, and Master of Science in Industrial Management degrees. After graduation, he worked for the Environmental Protection Agency and the Dow Chemical Company. He moved to Birmingham AL in 1997 where he was an industrial/chemical sales representative for Deeks & Company in Atlanta and other family owned distribution companies.
Upon his retirement, Tim rediscovered bridge which he had played in college. He was a member of the American Contract Bridge League, attaining the rank of Regional Master, and the Birmingham AL Duplicate Bridge Club where he played bridge a couple of times a week. In November 2018, Tim moved back to Atlanta where he and his wife first met and lived.
Tim’s parents predeceased him and he is survived by his wife of 27 years Sandy Warmels Smith; sisters Melinda Smith (Ron Bateman) of St. Simons Island GA, Peggy Wingo (Tommy) of Canton GA, and Billie Kay Snell (Brian) of Gadsden AL; 4 nieces and nephews and a multitude of great nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, June 27, at 2 pm at Shallowford Presbyterian Church, 2375 Shallowford Road NE, Atlanta GA 30345.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Georgia Tech Foundation Roll Call in Tim’s memory.
