George Trescot Brown, Sr. was born April 22, 1935 in Spartanburg, South Carolina. He lived in Greenville, SC and Monroe, NC spending most of his early years in Charlotte, NC and graduating from Charlotte Central High School. His college years were spent at North Carolina State University where he studied mechanical engineering, took part in the Air Force ROTC program, and was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity.
In 1957 he graduated with a mechanical engineering degree and accepted a job with the General Electric company. He began his career training in their technical marketing program in Schenectady, NY. A few months passed and the Air Force sent him to Guam along with eleven other engineers and architects to supervise civilian contractors building housing for military families. Working and socializing together they became life-long friends, frequently having reunions in their later years. George’s commitment to the air force ended in three years, and he returned to GE in Schenectady to resume his training.
Before leaving Schenectady to train at other GE facilities he met Carol whom he married in July of 1962. After completing the training program, George was assigned to work in Atlanta where he and Carol began their married life. His work as a sales engineer kept him busy as he called on large power generating facilities in Georgia. In 1966 he accepted a new position within GE and relocated to Macon, GA with their newborn daughter. Over the years he always found time to sing in the church choir, participate with his sons in their scouting activities, and be an active leader of the Sunset Optimist Club. His three children consider this to be their hometown as the family lived there for thirty-four years. George received many sales awards and commendations during his career and retired from GE in January of 1998 after forty-one years of service. He was excited to begin new chapters in his life consisting of golfing, gardening, and traveling.
Looking for a cooler climate he and Carol moved to Kenmure in Flat Rock, NC. George’s kindness, good nature, and readiness to lend a helping hand also moved with him to North Carolina. There he enjoyed golf, singing in the community chorus, and volunteering at church and in the neighborhood association. Retirement enabled him to golf several times a week and win the senior golf championship one year at their club. On the day of his 74th birthday he made a hole-in-one. Living in North Carolina also gave him the opportunity to more closely follow the NC State “Wolfpack” football and basketball teams.
After fourteen very happy years in North Carolina he and Carol knew it was time to move closer to one of their children. They focused on a senior living community and chose Lanier Village Estates. They moved to Lanier Village in the summer of 2014 and refer to it as a very wise choice. George also brought his kindness, good nature, and readiness to lend a helping hand with him to Gainesville. During his time at Lanier Village, he sang in the Barbershop Chorus and volunteered at Retired Treasures.
George is survived by his wife, three children, four grandchildren, his sister and her husband, two sisters-in-law, six nephews, and cousins.
A celebration of George’s life will take place at 3:00 PM Saturday February 18, 2023 in the chapel at Gainesville First United Methodist Church.
