Diego Perez, 37, passed away June 25, 2017 as a result of a hard-fought battle with an aggressive cancer, fibroblastic sarcoma. Ever the fighter, Diego showed unwavering tenacity and remarkable resilience in this trial of strength against an impossible adversary. Diagnosed less than one year ago, he was surrounded by his family and friends in his final moments as he was called back home to be with God.
He was a devoted family man and father who possessed a deep love for life, a passion for athleticism, and a true commitment to his faith.
Diego was born to Gladys and Edmundo Perez in Bogota, Colombia on January 30, 1980; he remained there throughout college at Universidad La Salle where he studied Animal Husbandry. From a young age, Diego showed an unquenchable thirst for learning and fulfillment. After coming to the US from Colombia at age 21, he amassed multiple professional certifications and worked as an EMT, realtor, and quality assurance professional. Beyond the office, he enjoyed the outdoors and always pushed himself to develop and refine his athleticism. In his short time on earth, he displayed astonishing diligence and hard work in his athletic pursuits including: MMA fighting, triathlons, and countless half-marathons.
After many years of dating, he married his love, Kenia Esther Taveras in September of 2016; while cancer unfairly cut their time short, undoubtedly, their love for one another will last forever. More than anything, Diego loved his children (biological and step) and nothing gave him greater joy or pride than being their father.
He is survived by his wife, Kenia; four children Jacob, Luna, Angelina, and Kyle; his parents, Gladys and Edmundo; his siblings; the mother of his biological children, Diana; and countless friends and loved ones.
Diego had a deep spiritual faith and is, no doubt, thankful to be resting in everlasting peace with God.
There will be a public memorial for friends and family from 3pm-4pm on Wednesday, June 28, 2017. This celebration of life will be held at Calvary Chapel, Fort Lauderdale (2101 West Cypress Creek Road, South Chapel). In remembrance of Diego's love for his family, a fund has been established in his honor; if so moved, in lieu of flowers, please consider contributions to:
