Bill was born in Liberty, North Carolina to the late Wesley and Beulah Ward. He graduated from Liberty High School, and attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1952, after working for AT&T in Greensboro. While in the Marines, he was stationed in Korea. After his honorable discharge in 1956, he returned to North Carolina, rejoining AT&T until retirement in 1998.
In 1957, Bill married the love of his life, Margie Herndon. The couple settled in Greensboro, where they raised their children, Billy and Mandy.
Friends say Bill was an original. He had a strong work ethic which compelled him to stay busy after retirement; woodworking and gardening were just a few of his endeavors. He believed helping people was very important and went out of his way to assist others.
Obstacles never deterred Bill; he always pushed through them. He once coached a team of football players who had been cut from a better team. Bill motivated the boys to defeat the team which didn't think they were good enough.
Bill was active in Florida Street Baptist Church, serving as a Junior Boys Sunday School Teacher and later as a Deacon.
With unique wit and intelligence, Bill loved to engage in stimulating conversation with family and friends. He especially enjoined weekly breakfast with his "Liars Club" friends. Together with Margie, he was devoted to his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Bill is survived by his wife of 64 years, Margie Ward; children: William Ward Jr (Billy) (Brenda); Amanda Chambers (Mandy)(Jeff); Grandchildren: Trent Womble (Jackie); Taylor Womble (Ashlyn); Great Grandchildren: Grayson, Caden, Regan, Palmer, and Oakley; and sister, Margaret Hemphill.
He is preceded in death by his sisters, Ann Ward and Jane Fisher; and brothers Leon T. Ward and Cliff Ward.
