A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 22, 2025 at Welker’s Crossroads Evangelical Methodist Church, 3829 Old Julian Road, Julian; burial will follow the service at Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends 1:00-1:45 p.m. prior to the service.
Ruby was the daughter of the late Virgil James and Lessie Thomas O’Briant, and was also preceded in death by her husband, Everett Smith; and sisters, Hazel Poe, Mary Elizabeth Poe, Sue O’Briant, Foylee Pickard and Sarah O’Briant.
She is survived by her daughters, Kathy Greeson (Dean) and Geraldine Layton (Michael); sons, Terry Coble (Betty) and Richard Coble (Lorraine); stepdaughters, Carmaletia Foust (Ben) and Darlene Birchette (George); sisters, Barbara Humble, Jean Baran, Marie Ferguson; 12 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
A faithful child of God and dedicated member of Welker’s Crossroads Evangelical Methodist Church, Ruby lived out her beliefs through acts of kindness and sacrifice for others. She had a servant’s heart, always putting the needs of those she loved before her own. Ruby served many years as a cafeteria worker for Guilford County Schools. During summer breaks, she worked hard every day at the tobacco farm in her community. Her giving spirit will continue on in the hearts of her family and friends.
