Semora, NC - Mary Morning Hunter Owen, formerly of Liberty, NC, passed away on Wednesday, October 23, 2024, at the age of 82. She passed peacefully holding the hand of her beloved husband of sixty years, James (Jim) Owen.
Mary was born on April 10, 1942, in Turkey, NC, to Louise Morning Brooks and James Magruder Hunter, Jr., and she was married to Jim on May 29, 1964. Mary attended college and completed her education in Fine Arts at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She was an exceptionally talented artist who found beauty in life’s simple moments, while encouraging others to do the same. Her kindness, generosity, and laughter brought immeasurable joy and light into her family’s lives, and she will forever remain in their hearts.
Mary is survived by Jim and their sons, James Benjamin Owen, of Greensboro, NC, and Robert Hunter Owen, wife Kate, and grandchildren Jordan and Quintin, of Raleigh, NC. She also is survived by sisters, Lou Underwood Hunter Bouldin and husband Gene Bouldin, of High Point, NC, Susan Avent Hunter, of Kernersville, NC, and many dear friends and extended family members. Mary was preceded in death by brothers, James Magruder Hunter, III and wife Dorothy Hartis, and Douglas Brooks Hunter and wife Betty Stone, and sister, Margaret Reid Hunter Malpass.
The family will receive friends for visitation on Saturday, November 9, 2024, at 1:00PM in the Loflin Funeral Home Chapel, 212 W. Swannanoa Avenue, Liberty, NC. A memorial service will follow at 2:00PM at the same location.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting memorials to the following organization dear to Mary’s heart: the Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation, 717 S. Marshall Street, Suite 105B, Winston-Salem, NC, 27101, www.brpfoundation.org, or other charities benefiting the North Carolina mountains, a place that Mary cherished.
