Jim was a native of Liberty, the son of the late Carl and Ruby Smith Loflin. He was a lifelong member of Grace Lutheran Church and a 1951 graduate of Liberty High School. He went to Lenoir Rhyne College on a football scholarship and attended Elon College. A veteran of the United States Army, he graduated from the American Academy of Funeral Service in New York City. After working with his father for many years, he succeeded him as owner of Loflin Funeral Home until his retirement.
Jim always had a smile, a kind word for everyone and he never met a stranger. He was a hunter, an outdoorsman and an avid sports fan. A Duke fan since childhood, he loved his Duke Blue Devils and never missed watching a game.
He is survived by his daughters, Deborah Loflin Hardin and husband, Tom, Marilyn Loflin Routh and husband, Jerry; beloved granddaughter, Michelle Loflin; nephews, Chad and Greg Cromer; niece, Lisa Cromer Cheek; brother-in-law, Bob Cromer; aunts, Agnes Smith, Irene Smith and Ruth Smith. Jim was preceded in death by his sister, Ann Loflin Cromer and infant brother, John Carl Loflin, Jr.
Memorials may be made to the Melanoma Research Foundation, 1411 K Street NW, Suite 800, Washington, DC 20005.
