He was the son of the late Walter Jackson and Susie Geneva Wall Caviness and was also preceded in death by his wife, Dollie Smith Caviness; son, James Eddie Caviness; great-granddaughter, Chloe Newbold; sister, Lou Gertie Barbre; and brothers, J.E. Caviness, Clarence Caviness, Everette Caviness and Verlie "VJ" Caviness.
James is survived by his sons, Steve Caviness (Lynne), Cleve Caviness (Robin) and Terry Caviness (Becky); daughter-in-law, Rory Caviness; sisters, Elsie Kime (Rex), Carol Brewer and Vivian Brewer; grandchildren, Darin Caviness (Leslie), Shane Caviness (Dana), Brandy Moran (Eddie), Chad Caviness (Amber), Doug Caviness (Wendy), Kristy Newbold (Paul Cudd), April Larson (Paul), Wesley Caviness and Lindsay Woodard (Drew); 14 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends for a time of visitation on Saturday, April 13, 2024 from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Loflin Funeral Home of Liberty; and other times at the home of Terry Caviness, 512 N. Greenbrier Street, Liberty. A funeral service will be held on Sunday, April 14, 2024 at 3:00 p.m. at The Loflin Funeral Home Chapel, 212 W. Swannanoa Avenue, Liberty, NC. He will be laid to rest in Dr. Clyde M. Gilmore Memorial Park in Julian, NC.
