A funeral service will be held at Pleasant Union United Methodist Church at 2 p.m., Saturday, February 5 where he was a lifelong member. Visitation will be Friday evening, 6-8 p.m., in the church’s Fellowship Hall where the family will also receive friends following the funeral on Saturday.
Mr. Shoffner was born the second child of Richard Sampson and Lillian Shepard Shoffner on June 1, 1932 in Julian, NC. He graduated from Nathanael Greene in 1950 and began a 41 year career with Sears, Roebuck & Company as a plant engineer, retiring in 1991. He served in the Navy during the Korean War, stationed aboard the USS Platte (AO 24) in the South Pacific. In 1959 he married Sarah Moore and they resided in Greensboro until 2008.
A man of many interests, Gene was passionate about antique car and tractor restorations and participated in many local and national shows. He was a charter member of the Gate City Triad Mustang Club and a member of the General Greene Chapter – Antique Automobile Club of America. He held a private pilot license and flew across the United States. Over the years he was involved with Junior Achievement, United Way of Greater Greensboro and Y Indian Guides. He was a loving and caring husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend to many.
Surviving are his wife, Sarah Moore Shoffner of the home; sons, Richard Blair Shoffner and his wife Carrinne Julian and David Eugene Shoffner and his wife, Katherine Davis Shoffner of Apex; brothers, J. Terry Shoffner (Patricia) of Liberty and Lynn D. Shoffner (Brenda) of Pleasant Garden; grandsons, Lane Davis Shoffner of Apex, Logan Shepard Shoffner of Julian and granddaughter Julia Sarah Shoffner of Apex.
The family requests that memorials be made to Pleasant Union United Methodist Church Building Fund, 5929 Coble Church Road, Liberty, NC 27298, Hospice of Randolph County, 416 Vision Drive, Asheboro, NC 27203, or The American Cancer Society.
