Doris was a kind and loving wife, mother and grandmother. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Liberty. Prior to moving to First Baptist, Doris and her family attended Macedonia Baptist Church where she was a Sunday School Teacher, Choir Director and church pianist. She enjoyed being together on the holidays with her family and spending time with her friends at her place at Emerald Isle. Doris was Valedictorian of and President of the student body of her Senior Class in 1950. She began working for Western Electric as a file clerk in 1958 and moved her way up through the ranks to become the Executive Assistant to The AT&T Federal Systems Division, President in Greensboro, NC where she retired after 35 years of service. According to her children, their mother was one of the most intelligent, intuitive, and patient people they ever met.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, November 25, 2022 at 1:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church, 659 S. Fayetteville Street, Liberty, NC with Rev. Dr. John Rogers officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at First Baptist Church, Liberty, NC. She will be laid to rest at Dr. Clyde M. Gilmore Memorial Park in Julian, NC.
She was the daughter of the late George Ansel and Anna Lee Smith Arrington and was also preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Elwin York; and sister, Melrose Woodard.
Doris is survived by her son, Travis York and his wife, Rhonda; daughter, Sheryl Robin Weitzel; grandchildren, Brandon York, Meredith Sexton, Adam York, Montanna Weitzel, and Marissa Weitzel; five great-grandchildren; and special friend and caregiver, Hettie Little.
