Brian graduated from North Carolina State University with a degree in Civil Engineering. He worked for the North Carolina Department of Transportation for 31 years in various positions, including Division Construction Staff Engineer and Resident Engineer. He was currently working for DRMP as a North Carolina Construction Engineering and Inspection Area Leader. Brian relished spending time outdoors and could often be found on a tractor. He loved all forms of transportation—especially trains. He also enjoyed spoiling his three beloved cats, Badger, Tuttie, and Princess.
Brian is survived by his wife of nearly 33 years, Melody; his daughters and sons-in-law, Marinna Smith Dahlstrom (Alex) and Ellie Martin (Danny); his sisters, Vickie (Mike) Burleson and Cheryl Smith; his brother, Allan (Vicky) Smith and niece, Jenna; and his father-in-law, Larry Simmons. Also in Heaven with Brian are his parents, Vance and Frances Smith; his grandparents, Vick and Hazel Shaw and William Arlendo and Linnie Smith; and his mother-in-law, Margo Simmons.
The funeral service will be conducted at Pleasant Union Church in Liberty, NC on Sunday, March 16, 2025, at 4:00 p.m., with the family receiving friends from 2:30 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. prior to the service. Burial will follow at the Dr. Clyde M. Gilmore Memorial Park in Julian, NC.
