Joel was the son of the late Max and Juanita Perry Garrett. He was a graduate of Nathanael Greene and attended UNC-Chapel Hill. He worked as a pilot with Piedmont and US Air for over thirty years.
Joel was ready with a joke for every occasion and could light up a room with his presence. He was a family man with a huge heart and a great sense of humor, and he was generous with everything he had. He was especially popular with children and they were instantly attracted to his fun-loving spirit. He loved the Lord, his family, the Julian community, watching his son and grandsons play baseball, Coble’s Lutheran Church, good food, animals, and having fun. He was an avid Tar Heels fan. Joel was proud of his four Eagle Scouts and was a wonderful husband, father, Pepaw, father-in-law, uncle, brother, and friend. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
He is survived by his wife, Gloria “Dee” Mitchell Garrett; daughters, Shannon G. Enzor (Brooks) of Whiteville; Robin G. Turner (Dean) of Whiteville; Christian G. VandeVeer (Cameron) of Wilmington; son, Mitchell Garrett (Kendra) of Wilmington; grandsons Lloyd Enzor; Logan Enzor; Dalton Turner; and Chase Turner; brothers, Carl Garrett and Jeff Garrett (Pam) of Julian; sister, Charlotte Harrington (David) of Julian; and his granddogs.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, July 20, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. at Coble’s Lutheran Church; burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends following the service.
Memorial contributions can be made to Coble’s Lutheran Church, 5200 Coble Church Road, Julian, NC 27283.
