Ina M. Schriber, 97, of Liberty, MO, passed away November 19 at Pleasant Valley Manor Care Center, with her daughter at her side. She was born February 21, 1917 in Camden, MO, to James Edward and Velma (Lewis) Hockensmith and grew up in Excelsior Springs, MO, graduating from ESHS in 1935. Ina had a beautiful singing voice and performed in many of the town’s musical events and school shows. After working for the Deputy Clerk in the Collector’s office in Excelsior Springs, Ina moved to Liberty to work in the County Collector’s office. She worked for the Veteran’s Administration in Excelsior Springs and in the mid-1940s, transferred to the V.A. in New Brunswick, NJ, where she met her first husband, Thomas LaRue Zwiebel. They married in Arlington, VA, on June 17, 1946 and Ina said living on the East coast was a great highlight of her life. She loved the seashore and she and LaRue often went into New York City to see Broadway shows. She worked at Rutgers University, The State University of New Jersey, from July 1, 1947 to October 31, 1953, as principal clerk in the Comptroller’s office. She loved the campus and had the opportunity to take classes in music, art and literature. She and LaRue enjoyed shopping for antiques in the adjoining cities and exploring the countryside. Moving to Kansas City North in 1953, Ina taught ceramics in her home until 1961, when she became the secretary to the principal at Eastgate Junior High School. School vacations were spent traveling as a benefit of LaRue’s employment at TWA. Ina always said she liked the destination when she got there, just not the flying. Upon LaRue’s death in 1973, Ina worked at General Tire, retiring in 1981. During her daughter’s school years, the house was lively with parties and activities and Ina continued to enjoy ceramics and painting, attending art classes at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art and participating in the Northland Art League. She served as President of the Little Village Homeowner’s Association and the William Jewell College Parent’s Association. A 50-year member in Beta Sigma Phi, Ina received the sorority’s highest honor, The Order of the Rose. Always a social butterfly, Ina took dance lessons at Arthur Murray Dance Studio, where she met her second husband, Richard Nelson Schriber; they married on January 23, 1982. Ina and Richard traveled in the U.S., visited Ireland, and wintered in Galveston, Texas, where Richard died in January, 1984. Ina returned to the Northland in 1984 and moved to Liberty in 2007. For the past year, she has resided at Pleasant Valley Manor where she received excellent care and commitment from the superb staff and also wonderful attention from Hospice Advantage. Ina was a member of Hillside Christian Church. Ina is survived by her daughter, Patricia (Bob) Petty of Liberty; and Richard’s children: Bill (Lynn) Schriber of Houston, TX; Phil (Sissy) Schriber, Austin, TX; Bob (Julie) Schriber, Austin, TX; and Rosemary (Scott) Denney of Wichita, KS.
