Gallup’s passion for basketball was contagious and he established such a strong basketball culture in Airdrie. For many kids (myself included), basketball was more than just a sport; it was a social structure, an avenue for personal growth, and a way to have fun. Gallup loved the game, but he loved even more to see all the kids he helped to become better people through basketball. His legacy will live on forever because of this. Rest in peace, ‘G’.

Allen Gallup is a legend of those who were involved in basketball in Airdrie, not only at Bert Church, but within the whole basketball community. In the late nineteen eighties and the first half of the nineteen nineties I served as the Bishop of the Airdrie Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Days Saints.  I did not miss many games during this time, and saw the influence he had on the young men on his team, not only our church young men, but with everyone on the team.  A great coach and mentor.

During these years I got to know the whole Gallup family well. What great parents both Allen and Susan were. My heart goes out to the family. He will be missed by them and many of us in the community.

My condolences to all the entire Gallup family, Coach G was a true mentor to all the players he coached myself included.  Many of us learned the values he lead by example trust, poise, determination, sportsmanship, professionalism, and the list goes on.  All of us posting here I consider fortunate that we had the opportunity to learn much about  basketball and life from Al.   He will be greatly missed but always remembered with a smile.

Coach Gallup has been on of the most influential people in my life.  When I was in grade 9, I was a terrible basketball player. There were two JV tryouts that year and after the first I decided that there was no chance I was making the team. There was a lunch time meeting I skipped because I figured I was getting cut anyway. Coach Gallup tracked me down and told me I needed to go tryout. I did, and made the team largely because, for some reason, Gallup wanted me. 

In my grade 9 season, the little playing time I got consisted of me taking two steps and falling over when I caught the ball. I may have been the worst grade 9 basketball player in the history of the school. I started attending open gym and Gallup taught me the fundamentals. I remember him saying things like "don't bring the ball down after getting a rebound." or "Spencer, you are a nice guy but when you play basketball you can't be a nice guy." He taught me how to be tough and resilient. More importantly than teaching how to play, I learned from his example how to be a mentor. I noticed that Gallup focused on individual development and cared for his players. I recall Gallup talking in church about coaching and becoming emotional when reminiscing about past players.

To make a long story short, I ended up playing 5 years of post secondary basketball. While I was never a superstar in college or university, I loved playing and had more great teammates and coaches. I can honestly say that if I had any other coach, I wouldn’t have played post secondary basketball. I have since become a teacher and have coached multiple teams. I have attempted to adopt a similar strategy as Gallup, focusing on player development. I have found that using this philosophy has yielded very positive results. I sometimes think to myself what my life would be like if coach Gallup hadn’t tracked me down in grade 9 and taken the time to teach me basketball. His legacy  lives on through his family, players and students he taught.

Its heavy on the heart to say goodbye to Uncle Allen, but I can say I am grateful for his leadership, his example, and his basketball coaching he gave me when I was younger. It is a blessing to know that he can now be reunited with his wife in heaven. Rest in peace together Uncle Allen and Aunt Susan!

On behalf of the Seerup family I would like to extend my sincerest condolences to the Gallup family for the loss of such a great person.  

Allen coached me at Bert Church Highschool from 1994 to 1996.  I can't express how grateful I am to have had the opportunity to be coached by Allen.  His passion for basketball combined with his calm approach to coaching enabled me to thrive as a teammate, a player and a person. Allen was a great man, and I am eternally grateful for the opportunity to have known him.

I worked closely with Allen for many years.  Allen was incredibly supportive of the work I was doing at Bert Church, and extremely proud of the accomplishments of his own basketball program at the school.  He left a legacy of excellence everywhere he coached.  Allen cared deeply about the kids he worked with, and was always available to support them.  But, most importantly, he was a family man.  He loved Sue and his children deeply.  My condolences to the Gallup family.  Allen will be missed.

“G”, “Gallup”, “Coach”, etc… We all had our own nickname for him. And I guess that’s just a testament to the kind of coach and man that he was. He was firm, but also highly relational with his players. You knew he expected a lot out of you, but you also knew that he would go the distance to make sure you reached your fullest potential. No doubt this page will soon be full of more memories and stories of how he left his mark on the game of basketball, because we all knew him in a special kind of way… Amongst all the special nicknames we had for him, Allen Gallup was truly a “LEGEND.”

Sending prayers of comfort from Airdrie!  I will speak for many that Mr. Gallup is the best!  Amazing man who changed the basketball world in Airdrie.  I loved being at his house and eating tomato and mayo sandwiches.  Thanks for teaching me to work hard, enjoy the win but learn from the loss.

Mr Gallup will live on in the hearts of all the players he coached. He left an unbeatable legacy and all who knew him were better for it. Prayers and thoughts are with Scott, Brad, Kari, Michelle and Regan.

My name is Paul Rabel and I wanted to pass on my condolences to the family. I am sad to hear about the passing of Mr. Gallup. I played basketball at George MacDougall in Airdrie at the “rival” school. While he was a competitor Mr. Gallup was always supportive of all young athletes. I remember him letting me join open gyms at Bert Church during off season, the spring league he created to create opportunities for young men to continue to play the game they loved and the encouragement and acknowledgment he would give to me after well played game. He was an integral part along with others of growing basketball and building community. In victory and defeat he was gracious. He always had a kind word for me and fueled my confidence that I could play basketball at a high level. I never attended Bert Church or was coached on a team but I always refer to him as Coach Gallup. His character was obvious and I’m so appreciative of his impact on my life as a young man. As I have gotten older and coached more and more I have tried my best to encourage all young athletes. To take time after a good game to let players on the other team know that their skill and desire is seen. I remember how it felt when he took time to congratulate me after a game. He was a good man and I’m sad to hear about his passing. Thank you to the family for sharing him with so many people over the years his impact is felt and continued in others lives. God bless.
