Stan was born on September 14, 1940 in West Columbia, South Carolina. He attended Brookland Cayce High School and was a member of the marching band, where he played the trumpet. Stan went on to further his education at the University of South Carolina, where he received a bachelor’s degree in management. He was a member of Phi Kappa Sigma and continued his love of playing the trumpet with USC marching band.
Stan joined the United States Air Force and served four years, during which he reached the rank of Captain. Stan was also a member of the Air National Guard. Furthering his education, Stan went back to the University of South Carolina, earning his law degree. Stan started his first law practice in West Columbia. Later, the law firm grew and became the Granby Law Firm. Stan went on to practice real estate law and developed many properties throughout Lexington, West Columbia, and Beaufort County, SC.
Stan is survived by his children, Alice Kirkland Dyer and Stancel Edward Kirkland, Jr.; his three grandchildren, Sarah Jane Dyer, Jackson Kirkland Dyer, and Ethan Lowell Kirkland; his brothers, Dan Kirkland and Ed Kirkland; his sister, Rhonda Kirkland; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Stan was predeceased by his wife of 61 years, Roberta “Bobbie” Godley Kirkland; his father, Lloyd Kirkland and mother, Alice Craft Kirkland; stepmother, Helen Proctor Kirkland; sisters, Annette Kirkland Parnell, Kay Kirkland Gunter, and Cynthia Mae Kirkland; and brother, Dean Proctor.
A funeral service will take place at Shandon Methodist Church, 3407 Devine St, Columbia, SC 29205, at 11:00 AM on December 19th, 2023. Burial will follow the service at Greenlawn Memorial Garden, 845 Leesburg Rd, Columbia, SC 29209. The family will receive friends at Player Hall at Shandon following the burial.
