Shawnette and Chuck,  I just saw Shirley’s obituary and I am so sorry for your loss of your sweet mother.  I went to Nazareth when Shirley and Edward were the youth group’s advisors.  We had the best times with them.  Beach trips, dances at their house, trips to Newberry College.  They were the best!  You have my deepest sympathy.

Shawnette and Chuck,

I am so sorry for your loss. It is hard to lose your mother. Aunt Shirley was a wonderful lady. She was so full of fun (and endless patience) always putting up with and sometimes joining in our many shenanigans. I know us four kids sometimes drove her bonkers. But I rarely remember her doing anything but laughing indulgently at us. 

There are so many happy memories. Beach trips, spend the nights and a special trip we all took to the World’s Fair. I will always associate  the smell of popcorn with your mom. She made the best! And I think popcorn should always be served in a big red bowl like she did.

I loved her so much. I will cherish my memories.

We are thinking about you and your family on this sad day and know in so many ways it is a celebration of your mom's life. We wish we had more opportunities to spend with her. One of our favorite times was a beautiful summer day out on the boat and docking at a local restaurant.  Shirley started dancing to the music and her joy was contagious and had others moving to the beat.  She was  fun-loving and spirited with a huge heart.  Her joy of life and generosity lives on through her family and countless others she shared her joy with.

We all going to Miss aunt Shirley I remember her asked ng me to sit with Uncle Edward and me and my kids visiting her when they where young she lived and could play the piano and she lived to sing  we will miss you aunt Shirley  my love and condolence to the family like love yall

Terry and I are so sorry to hear the passing of Ms. Shirley. We loved her dearly, we have so many memories of Ms. Shirley and Mr.Ed coming to the lake house. After the passing of Mr. Ed , Ms. Shirley would come up to the lake house and would come sit on the porch with me and rock and just talk. She was a precious lady and will be missed. Ms.Shirley we will see you again one sweet day❤️

I have one special memory I would like to share.  I became friends with Shirley and Ed when Shawnette, married my son Stuart.  They always made me feel part of their family.  When I was in my mid 40’s, I went to graduate school at USC.  I rented a small studio apartment and Shirley and Ed helped me furnish it.  They made their home available to me for meals and I was invited to swim in their pool anytime.  Since I knew no one, except Shirley and Ed, in the Columbia area, it made my year in graduate school so much easier, and I was grateful for their friendship and support.  I was lucky to have in-laws that felt like family.  I know Shirley made everyone that came to her home feel like family.

I remember times, of laughter,  excitement,  just a overwhelming joy, also the warm potato salad, (cause was the best way to eat it) the dressing at Thanksgiving, the homemade ice cream we use to make, beach trips, with my mom,and her, she loved to hear me sing, play my guitar, I remember one of our beach trips, my aunt Shirley lost her partial plate in the ocean,  we were  all down at the water looking for it, she was so upset,  and just in a blink of an eye, it rolled right up on the beach, she was excited, and happy, I remember that so well, all the dinners, holiday gatherings, I remember as a child, at Christmas time, going to swim in pool, the dance recitals, I could keep on writing, and sharing stories after stories, but I will always cherish those memories, to a beautiful soul, and to a loving aunt, I'll miss you, love you always..
