CHAPIN - Paul Richard Shealy, age 67, died Sunday, January 3, 2016 after a courageous battle with brain cancer. Mr. Shealy was born April 15, 1948 and was the son of the late Gaston Greengarnet (Jack) Shealy and Ruby Lee Sywgert Shealy of Lexington. He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Brenda Frick Shealy, his daughters, Lane Shealy Mixon and her husband Chris Mixon of Chapin and Erin Lee Shealy of Charleston. He was also the very proud “Pop” of two granddaughters, Kaylee and Kenadi James Mixon. He is survived by his sister, Eleanor Rawl of Lexington and brother Guy Shealy of Rock Hill; sisters- in –laws, Vauda Jane Shealy of Lexington, Patricia Shealy of Aiken, and Lee Ann Shealy of North Augusta. He is also survived by his brother-in-laws Steven Frick and his wife Retha of Little Mountain, Eldred Frick and his wife Pat and Derrill Frick and fiancée, Adriane Shealy all of Chapin as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brothers, John, Darr, and Louis Shealy.
Mr. Shealy was a graduate of Lexington High School playing football and baseball for the Wildcats and a graduate of the University of South Carolina. He was a retired educator who dedicated 39 years to public education. He was a teacher and coach at Lexington High and Chapin High Schools before going into administration. He loved teaching and coaching and strived to be a role model for his students and athletes. He was deeply honored to be inducted into the Chapin High School Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2015. He was an assistant principal at Irmo Middle School Campus I and Chapin High School, Principal at Mid Carolina High School and Gilbert High School, and after retirement an administrative assistant at Irmo High School. It was not about the position or politics but doing the right things for the students.
He loved his family, church, and community. He was a member and past president of the Chapin Ruritan Club and served as Zone Governor and District Governor of the Columbia District. He was a member of St. Peter “Pineywoods” Lutheran Church where he served on the church council and taught Sunday school. He was involved in numerous community activities and the first to volunteer when there was a project to be completed or a person in need.
Services for Mr. Shealy will be held on Wednesday, January 6 at 3 PM at St. Peter “Pineywoods” Lutheran Church in Chapin with burial to follow in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Peter Lutheran Church Building Fund, 900 Dreher Island Road, Chapin, SC 29036.
The family wishes to thank all the family and friends who loved and supported our Pop over the years and during his illness. He treasured the many visits, cards, stories, and memories shared. The family also wished to thank Dr. Chelsea Stilwell of Lexington Oncology for her care and compassion. Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Chapin Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.
