Mervin “Merv” Morgan Smith passed away in Lexington, South Carolina on July 26, 2022 at 95 years of age. Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on June 21, 1927, he and his family moved to West Orange, NJ where he attended West Orange High School. The only child of Anna Mae Edwards and Mervin Aloysius Smith, he graduated from Seton Hall University and served as a Seaman First Class in the United States Navy. On October 12, 1957, he married Mary Agnes DeLosh of Watertown, New York. They first resided in Syracuse, New York where their two children were born. He worked for Sentry Insurance for 37 years, moving in 1963 to Maplewood, NJ and returning upstate to Liverpool, New York in 1974, where he lived until 2018. His wife, Mary, predeceased him in November 1987. Life-long blood donor, crossword enthusiast, and sports fan, Merv was a proud father and devoted grandfather. For many years, he visited Onondaga Lake daily for his four-mile walk.
He is survived by his daughter, Theresa Smith and her husband, Ted Burke; his son, Christopher Smith and his wife, Kotch Smith and his grandsons, Theodore Burke Jr., Matthew Burke, and Tristan Burke.
The family will be having a private service next week. At the family’s request, donations may be made in lieu of flowers to the Onondaga Lake Conservation Corps.
