November 22, 1923 - October 17, 2016
LEXINGTON - Surrounded by family singing hymns and while “Amazing Grace” was being sung, Mattie Meetze Frick Wingard, 92, entered the Kingdom of God into the presence of her Lord and Savior hearing the words, “Well Done, My Good and Faithful Servant”. Mrs. Wingard was born on November 22, 1923 to the late Reuben Daniel & Fannie Sons Meetze.
At the age of 33, she was left with providing care for five young children following the death of her first husband. A hard working lady all of her life, she worked tirelessly providing for them. Mrs. Wingard retired from Lexington School District 1 after more than 40 years of service with Newberry & Lexington County Schools. She also could be found most Saturdays working the counter at the downtown Tapp’s Deli until it closed.
She always performed any task that needed to be done to ensure those she loved were all cared for. Known as Mom or Maw-Maw, she was an amazing cook who enjoyed preparing meals for family and friends. But, more important, she was known as a Christian woman who practiced her faith daily and prayed diligently for her loved ones.
She was a long-time member of Red Bank Baptist Church and special recognition to the ladies of the Agape Sunday School class whom she loved dearly.
Mrs. Wingard was the last of her siblings and, in addition to her parents, was predeceased by her first husband, Lawrence Grady Frick, Sr. (1957) and second husband, Brooks E. Wingard (1994); five brothers and six sisters; daughter, Genelle Frick; grandchildren, Ann Jeanette Frick and Jason Johnson and great-grandchild, Jesse Frick.
Surviving are her six children, John Daniel Frick (Linda) of Little Mountain; Lawrence Grady Frick, Jr. (April) of Albertville, AL.; Jerry W. Frick (Betty) of Lexington; Betty R. Sessions (O’Neal) and Shirley S. Johnson (Ken) of Gilbert; and Pauline McClinton (Bailey) of Prosperity. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Lucille Y. Meetze of Irmo, seventeen (17) grandchildren, twenty-three (23) great-grandchildren, and nine (9) great-great-grandchildren.
A Home Going Service of celebration will be held on Thursday, October 20, 2016 at 11:00 AM at Red Bank Baptist Church, 120 Community Dr., Lexington SC 29073 by Pastor Butch Powell, Pastor Jeff Wright and Pastor Jimmy Walker with family visitation following. A private interment service for family and relatives will be held at St. Peter Lutheran Church, Chapin, SC at 4:00 PM.
The family wishes to thank everyone for their kindness, prayers and words of encouragement during the past five weeks that our Mother was cared for by family members and by special caregiver, Alice Jackson, who was a Godsend to the family during a time of great need of caring for our Mom. To SC Hospice, especially for Dee who was so instrumental in helping the family; and special thanks to Dr. Edward Golay and his wonderful staff for their many years of care, and to Johnny Matheny & staff at the Medicine Mart.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Red Bank Baptist Church, 120 Community Dr., Lexington, SC 29073 towards Missions or to the “Lift Fund” at Mt. Tabor Lutheran Church, 816 Mt. Tabor Road, Little Mountain, SC 29075.
