Betty was born August 16, 1944 in Sumter, SC, the only child to Charles Vernon “Bit” Wilder and Martha Redfern Wilder. She completed undergraduate work at Winthrop University and her graduate studies at the University of South Carolina. She then moved to Lexington and began teaching at Lexington Elementary School, and then to Lexington Middle School as the Choral Director. Betty loved developing and encouraging the talents of her students, in the classroom and within the community. She completed 29 years as a Music Educator prior to her retirement.
Betty enjoyed gardening, her cats, and traveling regularly. She loved the beach, no matter the season. She was passionate about the arts, with a particular affection for music, and instilled this in her children at an early age. She was active in the Columbia Choral Society and the St. Stephen’s choral and handbell choirs.
She is survived by her husband, Samuel Henry Hendrix of Lexington and sons, Christopher B. Hendrix of Mount Pleasant, SC, and Scott Alexander Hendrix (Tyson W. McCormick) of Charleston, SC.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, July 21, 2021 from 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home in Lexington, South Carolina. A funeral service will be held at 4:00 pm on Thursday, July 22, 2021 at St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church, downtown Lexington. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials are made to the St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church Music Fund or the South Carolina Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association.
