Marie High Humphrey, 77, of West Columbia, SC passed away in her home on July 10, 2023 after a short battle with cancer. She was born in Georgetown, SC on March 12, 1946 and was the daughter of the late John Franklin High and Dorothy Sanders High of Georgetown, SC.
She leaves behind her high school sweetheart and husband of 58 years, Gary Humphrey of West Columbia, SC; three children, Janice H. (Greg) Caines, Adam T. (Carla) Humphrey, and Erick S. (Surrina Sproles) Humphrey, all from Lexington, SC. She was Mimi to seven grandchildren: Ashlyn Humphrey, Jordan Humphrey, Eric Benage, Adair Day, Grace Day, Anna Claire Day, and Mary Caines; and two great-grandchildren, all living in the state of South Carolina. Marie also leaves behind her sister, Teresa H. (Charles) Carmichael of Prosperity; brother, Roy Arnold (Mary Lou) High of McClellanville, SC, and many nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her brothers, John Allen High and Donald R. High, both of Georgetown, SC.
Over the years, Marie had many trades including substitute school teaching, working in a dress shop, and a bank. Her favorite experiences were being the owner/operator of a daycare where “Miss Ree” loved and raised many children as her own and owning Curves for women, where she developed lifelong friendships with her “Curves Ladies.”
Marie’s love for others was evident throughout her life. Her ability to make friends and conversation in any environment was a gift. Marie made others feel comfortable and loved through laughter and food. She truly never met a stranger. She enjoyed time spent at the family lake house, trips to the beach, camping trips and celebrating events in her home. Marie loved lighthouses, the beach, Elvis Presley, Monday night dinner with friends, relaxing in her pool, reading, and having good conversations with others. She will be missed by many who called her Miss Marie, Mimi, and friend over the years.
A visitation for Marie will be held at 12:00 pm on Thursday, July 13, 2023 followed by a funeral service at 1:00 pm at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel located at 503 North Lake Drive, Lexington, SC 29072 with a burial to follow at Bush River Memorial Gardens, 5400 Bush River Road Columbia, South Carolina 29212.
