Coleen, born November 6, 1930, in Charleston, South Carolina, was the cherished daughter of David Thornton Coleman and Julia Rebecca Groseclose Coleman. She grew up in Charleston, where she enjoyed an active childhood filled with sports, particularly basketball, as well as participation in church youth groups and the Girl Scouts. In 1950, she married the love of her life, Theodore E (Ted) Derrick Jr. The couple shared 58 wonderful years together before his passing. During their early years of marriage, they lived in Virginia while Ted served in the Army during the Korean War. During this time, Coleen worked for the federal government.
After Ted’s military service, they settled in West Columbia, South Carolina. Coleen dedicated herself to raising their family before working as a bookkeeper for RH Smith Lumber Company and then Educational Wonderland in Lexington. Following her retirement, she continued to give back to her community by volunteering at Lexington Medical Center and serving at her church by decorating for senior luncheons and offering devotionals at nursing homes.
Coleen found joy in crocheting, crafting, exercising, and dining out with friends. She also treasured her time spent at the Senior Center in Gilbert, where she formed lasting friendships and participated in many activities.
She is survived by her children, Cynthia Kelley and her husband Frank, Ted Derrick III and his wife Suzanne, Dottie Rikard and her husband Sammy, and Nan Tisdale and her husband Mike; 11 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her devoted dog, Honey; her parents; her beloved husband, Ted Derrick; her brother, David Coleman; and all siblings and spouses of her generation on both sides of the family.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Bertha, Linda, Tammy, Kimberly, and the many other caregivers who supported Coleen over the years. May her memory bring comfort to all who knew her.
A celebration of life service will be held on Sunday, January 19, 2025, in the Lexington Baptist Church chapel at 2:00 pm with visitation from 1:00 pm until the hour of the service at the church.
Memorials may be made to Lexington Baptist Church.
