LEXINGTON – Funeral services for Dr. Joseph M. Cavanagh, Jr., M.D., 54, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, January 18, 2014 at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Friday, January 17, 2013 at the funeral home.
Dr. Cavanagh was born May 26, 1959 in Aiken, SC and passed away on Monday, January 13, 2014. He was the son of the late Joseph M. and Mary Cavanagh. He grew up in Las Vegas, Nevada and moved to South Carolina in the late 1970s.
Surviving are his wife, Carla Cavanagh, sister, Jo Ann Shove, brother-in-law, Jeffrey Shove of North Wilkesboro, NC, niece, April Shove of Mount Pleasant, SC, nephew, Bret Shove of Bartow, Fl; sister-in-law, Joy Copley; mother-in-law, Joy Copley and cousins, Ray Cavanagh and his wife, Fay and Warren Cavanagh and his wife, Anna all of Columbia, SC. Dr. Cavanagh loved people, animals, the practice of medicine and travel. He had a wonderful sense of humor and was an avid Gamecock fan. He had a lifelong interest in fitness, acquiring a Black Belt in Tae Kwan Do and numerous body building awards. Dr. Cavanagh was a graduate of the University of South Carolina with degrees in kinesiology (sports medicine), Doctor of Medicine and was board certified in internal medicine. Dr. Cavanagh practiced at Peterson & Plante Internal Medicine for the last 20 years. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests the following charities, “Doctors without Borders”, “Oliver Gospel Mission” and “The Boy Scouts“.
