LEXINGTON - Jimmy Brannon Taylor passed peacefully into eternity with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Friday, May 6, 2011. Born December 2, 1942, to the late James Claude and Frances Kyzer Taylor. Mr. Taylor is survived by his wife, Diane Agnew of 47 years also of Lexington.
Mr. Taylor devoted his adult life to educating others. His career began as an educator at Airport High School in 1972 after graduating from Trevecca Nazarene College. Mr. Taylor taught History and Social Studies transferring to guidance after several years. In 1982, he became assistant principal at Brookland-Cayce High School (this was also his alma mater). During these years he earned his Masters plus thirty in secondary administration from USC. In 1988, he was named principal of Airport High School where he was dearly beloved and treasured. In 1994, Mr. Taylor left Lexington School District Two and went to Dutch Fork High School as principal after a nationwide search. Mr. Taylor retired from full time education in July 1998 and received the Order of the Palmetto from Governor David Beasley and presented by Congressman Joe Wilson.
His other educational contributions include: Working for the School Boards Association of South Carolina, first ever state appointed Principal Specialist at Allendale-Fairfax High School, Career and Technical Education Director for School District Five of Lexington and Richland Counties, Director of Adult Education for School District Five, Interim Principal at Dutch Fork High School, Interim Principal at Saluda High School, Interim Principal at Chapin Elementary, Principal of record at Midlands Middle College.
His community and church contributions include: Missionary President, work and witness trip to Dominica three times, one semester teaching at Africa Nazarene University in Kenya, co-founder of New Hope Church and Columbia First Church of the Nazarene Mentoring and Tutoring program, served on church boards and as Sunday school teacher.
Other than his wife of the home, Mr. Taylor is survived by son, Brannon K. Taylor (Amy) of Prosperity, daughter, Kelly T. Crump (Troy) of Chapin, sister, Lynn Taylor of Lexington; grandchildren, Austin Crump, Caleb Taylor, Joshua Taylor, and Reagan Crump.
A Memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, May 9, 2011 at First Church of the Nazarene, 901 St. Andrews Road, Columbia, SC 29210. The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Sunday May 8, 2011 at the church. Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel is assisting the family with the arrangements. Memorials are to be made to the Jimmy B. Taylor Scholarship Fund care of Dutch Fork High School 1400 Old Tamah Road, Irmo, SC 29063.
