James H. Rampey, Jr., 85, was born in Greenville, SC on April 27, 1936 and took his heavenly father’s hand to lead him home to see his beloved Brenda at 9:45 am on Tuesday, October 19, 2021. He was the only child of Annie Lou (Cox) Rampey and James Harron Rampey, Sr. After graduating from Greenville High School, he received his Bachelor of Science degree in Microbiology from Furman University and Masters from Clemson University, in addition to advanced degrees from Greenville General Hospital system.
He began his career at Greenville General in Laboratory Services before a brief stop at Pepsi Cola doing quality control in their labs. After Pepsi, he opened a private laboratory services business with his longtime friend and lab partner, Glen Potts. Later, he moved on to a thirty-year career in Epidemiology and Infection Control at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Asheville, NC followed by Providence Heart Institute in Columbia, SC and finally retired from Newberry Hospital in 2015.
Jim loved his family, playing fast-pitch softball, singing in his church choir and playing his trumpet in the church orchestra at Riverland Hills Baptist Church where he and Brenda were members since 1990. He enjoyed his work tremendously but also loved fishing, science fiction movies, and was known to possess a mean sweet tooth. His outlook on life was always positive regardless of the circumstances; a great example for all that knew him well.
Surviving are his loving children - son, James Christopher Rampey and wife, Rion P. Rampey of Mt. Pleasant, SC; his daughter, Kelly R. Craig and husband, Benjamin M. Craig of Lexington, SC. In addition, he has two grandchildren, Emerson and Grey.
A memorial service organized by Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel will be held at Woodridge Memorial Gardens and funeral home’s covered outdoor area (138 Corley Mill Road, Lexington, SC 29072) on Friday, November 5, 2021 at 12:00 PM.
