Life is illuminated by individuals who leave profound legacies of love, service, and inspiration. James Bratton Kirkland, 84, son of AB and Gladys Kirkland, born on April 14, 1939, in Aiken County, SC, was such a beacon. Growing up in Ellenton and Williston, his life radiated optimism, rooted in the belief that dreams could be realized through perseverance, positivity, and heart.
From his early days as a student school bus driver in Barnwell County to coaching the Clio High School lady basketball team to a championship, James was a force of positive influence. His career truly soared when he took the helm as a elementary school principal in Beaufort. The bonds he forged there were not fleeting; friends from those days remained firmly in his heart throughout his life, a testament to his enduring connections. His unwavering dedication was further exemplified when he selflessly fought for equitable education conditions for all children as the Superintendent of schools for Lee County.
In Swansea, Friday night football games or visits to a local restaurant were occasions of camaraderie. They were moments for James to connect, inspire, and chat with fellow community members and former students. True to his nature, James never met a stranger, always open to sharing a story, a laugh, or even just the simple pleasure of a hot dog.
Family was James’ anchor. Beautiful beaches of South Carolina, the mountain trails of North Carolina, and fishing adventures with his grandchildren on Lake Murray were backdrops to countless cherished memories. He and his grandkids loved nothing more than the times spent together solving interesting math challenges or just talking and laughing about their days.
Ever curious, James’ keen interest in global events often related to the achievements and pursuits of his children, leading to rich family discussions. A proud alumnus of the University of South Carolina (he loved his Gamecocks) and Western Carolina University, every accolade was a testament to his commitment to service and the upliftment of others.
James leaves behind Linda Kirkland, the mother of his children; his children, Jay (Senaida), Dee (J.), and Bradley (Alison); cherished memories with his grandchildren, Addison, Madeline, Jadon, Emma Kate, Emelia, Sofia, and Bratton; and his younger brother who he adored, Ansel Brown Kirkland Jr.
A celebration of James’ remarkable life will commence at 3:00 PM on Saturday, September 30, 2023 at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel, 503 North Lake Drive, Lexington, SC, 29072, followed by a reception.
