He was born in Charleston, SC on March 16, 1942 to Howard W. Jenkins, Sr. and Mildred Fisher Jenkins. He was preceded in death by his parents; his son-in-law, Tripp Harvey; his sister, Myrna Garrett and brothers, John Jenkins and Richard Jenkins.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Doris Avril Jenkins; children, Karen Jenkins Dekle (Lehmon) of Clemson, SC, Elyse Jenkins Harvey of Summerville, SC, Kirk Thomas Jenkins (Staci) of Lexington, SC and grandchildren, Laura Dekle, Jack Dekle, Grace Dekle, Sallie Dekle, Amber Harvey, Kate Jenkins, Luke Jenkins and Cooper Jenkins. He is also survived by one brother and numerous nieces and nephews.
After graduating from Tennessee Tech University, Howard went on to get his PHD at the University of Tennessee. He then worked for Eastman Kodak in their Chemicals division for the whole of his career. He began in Kingsport, TN and then moved to Columbia, SC where he and Doris raised their family. They then moved to Pendleton, SC where he lived until his health declined. He was active in Mt. Hebron United Methodist Church in West Columbia until his retirement and then Clemson United Methodist Church during his retirement years.
Howard loved gardening and tinkering around working on and fixing things. He never met a stranger. He was a loving husband, amazing dad and proud Papa to his grandchildren. Howard’s spirit of inquisitiveness, kindness and genuine affection for life will be carried on through his family and friends.
The family would like to give special thanks to the staff at Carroll Campbell Place for the amazing kindness and care that they gave him - especially the staff on his hall (Dogwood Trail).
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, September 18, 2021 at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel.
