Horace Onan Sharpe, 90, passed away peacefully at Oakleaf Village/ Oakhaven on December 30, after a 3 year struggle with Parkinson’s. Born on September 1, 1932, he was the son of the late Horace Ivan and Onovese Ricard Sharpe.
He attended Red Bank and Lexington Schools, graduating from Lexington High in 1950, served 2 years in the US Army at Ft. Jackson in Columbia, and then earned a degree from Columbia Business College. He worked for General Electric Company for 10 years, and retired from The State Division of General Services where he worked in Contracts Purchasing.
“H.O.” was a lifelong active member of St. James Lutheran Church where he proudly served in many capacities including Church Council (as president several terms), many Church Committees, Church Choir, Sunday School Teacher, Call Committees, and Lutheran Men in Mission. He was a man of strong Faith; a dedicated family man; a devoted, loving and kind husband and father; and a proud and giving granddaddy and great granddaddy. He cherished all family time, especially at their “home away from home” at the Isle of Palms. As a gifted guitar player, he enjoyed playing and singing at every opportunity. In retirement he spent lots of time “practicing” and shared his talents visiting nursing homes and other assisted living facilities, playing, singing, and entertaining.
Surviving are: his loving wife of 69 years, Doris Rhoten Sharpe; their children: Robert (Jan) Sharpe of Lexington, and Maria (Doug) Sampson of Jamestown, NC; 4 grandchildren: Melanie (Danny) Cronin, Laura (Cameron) Bowers, Daniel (Ashley) Sharpe, and Leslie (Daniel) Howard; 9 great-grandchildren: Carter and Jackson Cronin, Sam and Walker Bowers, McKenna and Landon Sharpe, and Cameron, Grayson and Brennan Howard; many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his sister, Vondola Goff.
A Visitation will be held at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home – Lexington on Monday, January 2, 2023 from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. The funeral service will be at St. James Lutheran Church on Tuesday, January 3, 2023 at 11:00 a.m., with burial in the church cemetery following the service.
The family would like to thank the Staff at Crescent Hospice and the staff at Oakleaf Village/ Oakhaven for the excellent care and attention, and their loving support during the last 4 months, especially: Jenny, Amber, Christie, Daelyn, and Tiffany.
