WEST COLUMBIA -Evelyn Burns Lybrand, 91, died peacefully on Monday, June 6, 2016 while surrounded by her family. Born August 16, 1924 in Clarendon County, she was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Evelyn had the privilege of growing up on a farm in Oswego, as the eldest of nine children. She left Sumter County, as young bride, to make her home in West Columbia with her husband Walter Lybrand. She was a homemaker that had an exceptional gift for cooking and maintaining an immaculate home. Her family, friends and church family considered it a real treat when she prepared and served her delicious chicken salad and famous brownies. She served the community for 27 years as a school crossing guard, ushering children safely to and from their home each day. Evelyn was a charter member of Our Saviour Lutheran Church and served her church in many roles; nursery caregiver, Vacation Bible School staff, Sunday School teacher, Lib White Circle, Women of the ELCA, Social Ministry and Evangelism Committees. She enjoyed a happy and well-lived life in Christ and was affectionately known as “Grandmama” to her three grandchildren and “GG” to her two great-grandsons. She was the quintessential southern lady; with a quiet manner and sweet smile to everyone she met. Her life was marked by devotion to her faith, family and friends.
Evelyn is survived by two sons, and daughters-in-law, Wayne and Marie Lybrand of West Columbia and John and Vicki Lybrand of Pendleton; a granddaughter, Meridyth Lybrand Robinson and husband, Daniel of Alexandria, VA; two grandsons, Hampton Lybrand and wife Nicole of Mt. Pleasant and Matthew Lybrand of Columbia; two great-grandsons, John Daniel “Jack” and Luke Macmillan Robinson of Alexandria, VA; six brothers and sisters, Burnell Wood, Margaret Johnson, David Burns, Robert Burns, Eugene Burns and Charles Burns; and sister-in-law, Blanche Lybrand of West Columbia.
Evelyn is now in the presence of her Lord and Saviour and has been reunited with those that preceded her in death, her husband of 62, years, Walter Lybrand, her parents, James and Corrina Morris Burns, sister, Olene Brown and brother, Alvin Burns.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, June 9, 2016 at Our Saviour Lutheran Church in West Columbia. The Rev. Lance Henderson will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Tabor Cemetery in West Columbia.
