Dorothy Mina Coleman Parler, 95, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Monday, May 2, 2022. “Dott” or “Mama Dott” as she was affectionately known, valiantly lived out her final days with family close by, and today is in heaven with a multitude of friends and family who have gone before. Dott was born in Pamplico, SC to Johnnie and Florence Coleman in 1926. She graduated from Columbia College in 1947, and taught elementary school for several years in Hartsville, SC. She later met and married James William Parler in 1952. They moved to Columbia, SC where they started, owned and operated Carolina Wood Products, Inc. for 50+ years. Dott was a founding member of Lexington Presbyterian Church in Lexington, SC, where she served in several capacities over the years including Women’s and Children’s Ministries.
Dott is predeceased by husband, Jim; sister, Naomi Coleman and daughter-in-law, Julia Floyd Parler. She is survived by son, John Russell Parler and his wife Robin Vaughan-Parler; son, David Wayne Parler and daughter, Judy Parler Randall and her husband Carey Woodson Randall, II, all of Lexington, SC. Also surviving are her six grandchildren, Shannon Boatwright and husband Brad, Madison Rogers and husband Jason, Chelsea Parler, Jamie Randall, Coleman Parler, and Grayson Parler. Dott is also survived by six great grandchildren, Mina Shull, Sawyer Shull, Ralla Rogers, Lila Rogers, Lorelei Randall, Julianna Randall, and many other nieces and nephews.
Dott’s genuine love and concern for others was far reaching and will be missed by many. She was a counsel and confidant to numerous through the years. Her gifts of love and friendship will endure many future generations, and she set an extraordinary example for all to follow. She befriended naturally and genuinely to a multitude, and her spirit will endure long through the years to come. Her wisdom and advice were also revered by many, as well as her ability to listen and truly embrace others as they are. She was a natural conversationalist who loved hearing about others experiences, and really saw through others’ eyes. She loved gardening, flowers, birds, springtime, fresh air, warm summer nights, and the beauty that morning brings. She always felt her prime purpose in life was the care, concern, and pride for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She will always be “Mama Dott” and she will live on forever in our hearts.
The family would like to express sincere thanks to the women at Lexington Presbyterian for the many meals, phone calls and prayers on behalf of Mom. Also, immense gratitude to Amedysis Hospice for their amazing love and care during her last days.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the SC Muscular Dystrophy Association or Lexington Presbyterian Church.
Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel will be handling the arrangements with visitation at the funeral home on Wednesday, May 4 from 5:00 – 7:00 pm. Memorial service will be held at Lexington Presbyterian Church on Barr Road at 6:00 pm on Thursday, May 5. Graveside will be family only.
