AUBURN – Robert Yves Baillargeon, age 88, of Lewiston passed away at The Hospice House in Auburn, surrounded by loved ones, on May 8, 2016. He was born and raised in Lewiston, the son of the late Elzear and Antoinette (Boutin) Baillargeon, Bob and Lucille lived in their home on College Road for 62 years and just recently moved to Montello Heights. In his early years he attended St. Peter and Paul Grammar School and was a member of the first graduating class from St. Dominic High School, Lewiston, in 1945. While at St. Dom’s, he served as Class Officer for three years, a sports editor for four, played both baseball and basketball for four years, and was Captain of the basketball team. Bob enlisted in the U.S. Navy in April of 1945. He served in Central and South American waters aboard the aircraft carrier USS Franklin D. Roosevelt, and was honorably discharged in September of 1946. He then went on to graduate in 1950 from the University of Maine, Orono, with a B.A. degree in History and Government. Bob was dedicated in his service to his church and the community in which he lived. He served as Executive Secretary at St. Peter and Paul Parish from 1950-1951. He was a Welfare Investigator for the Lewiston Welfare Department from 1951-1953. He also served as Director of the City of Lewiston Health and Welfare Department from 1953 to 1966. From there, he went on to work as the Social Service Director at the Marcotte Nursing Home from 1966 to 1969 and Assistant Administrator from 1969 to 1970. Before his retirement in 1988, Bob was Owner and Administrator of Gorham Manor Nursing Home. In addition, he was actively involved in a number of community and social organizations in Lewiston, including time spent as President of the Maine Nursing Home Association. In retirement, Bob took time to travel with his wife. He especially enjoyed annual trips to Quebec, Canada for the Maple Syrup Festivals there, where he was also able to visit with his extended family. Going out to dinner and playing cards were a weekly event with Lucille and friends. He was passionate about watching hockey games, especially the beloved Boston Bruins! He was also an avid gardener and looked forward to Spring each year, when he could get out of doors and plant seeds in the garden. He received a lot of joy in a good harvest and being able to share what he grew. Bob will be missed for the love and compassion he had for others, his intelligence, leadership, and guidance, his sense of humor and quick wit, and time spent in meaningful conversation with him. Bob’s life and acts of service were a gift and blessing to so many! He leaves his wife of 66 years, Lucille A. (Dubois) Baillargeon; his daughter, Diane Baillargeon; his son, Paul Baillargeon and his wife Ellen; two grandchildren, Amy and Tracy Baillargeon; a sister, Pauline (Baillargeon) Champoux; and many others who loved him dearly. He was predeceased by his sister, Fernande B. Masters. The family wishes to give special thanks to Diane Cote and Kelly Harris for their unconditional support and love throughout his life. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday May 11, 2016 at 11am at the Basilica of Ss. Peter and Paul (lower chapel) followed by committal prayers at St. Peter’s Cemetery in Lewiston.
