She died of metastasized breast cancer to the bones. She fought a courageous battle 7 years ago when she was first diagnosed with cancer. In February, she received the news that the cancer had returned. Rita was a woman of great strength, courage, bravery and faith. It is her faith that sustained her throughout her life but especially the last few months. She taught us all many lessons in living and dying.

Her biggest and most successful project is the Franco-American Heritage Center (former St. Mary’s Church) where she was a member of the founding Board of Directors and its executive director. She led the organization for over 12 years and during that time helped raise over 6 million dollars to create a legacy for the Lewiston-Auburn community and Franco-American population of Maine. The center has been claimed to be one of the most beautiful community assets the city has seen and is a tribute to her ancestors. The Board of Directors dedicated the Franco-American Heritage Museum in her honor in 2018. A legacy she was extremely proud of.
