She was born in Bangor, Maine on February 25, 1932, the third of six children born to Charles and Nellie Cotton. Mom attended local schools and learned early in life the meaning of hard work. She was the front desk clerk at Beals Laundry for many years and then held various jobs in the local shoe shops. Just prior to retirement, she enjoyed working as a bus aide for the Auburn School Department.
In June of 1959, she married the love of her life, Merwyn Lawrence, and together they raised four daughters. Mary and Merwyn enjoyed time spent at their camp in Township D and traveled to New York, Washington DC, Las Vegas, Tennessee, Hawaii, Florida and Aruba.
Mary is survived by her beloved sister, Faye Tower, daughters Katherine (AI) Hatfield, June (Kenneth) Daigle, Brenda (Randy) Hinkley, Janet (Leo) Morissette, 12 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren.
Mary was predeceased by her beloved husband, stepsons Richard and Roy, her parents, sisters Gertrude, Rosie, Alice, brother Charles Jr. and special nephew, Edwin.
The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the staff at Clover Healthcare on the Donogal Memory Care Unit, for their care and compassion given to our mom, as well as Margaret Hospice RN and several other hospice nurses, Mom’s singing angel, Sister Ann, and Chaplain Larry from Andwell Hospice, all of whom gave more than we ever expected to ensure our mom was well cared for. Your caring guidance to the family during this difficult time was greatly appreciated.
Mary will always be remembered as a free spirit who was never afraid to speak her mind. We love you; we’ll miss you and may you rest in peace.
Per Mary’s wishes, graveside services will be private. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating in her memory to the Dempsey Center and or to the Androscoggin Humaine Sociey. Arrangements by The Fortin & Pinette Group 305 Alfred A. Plourde Parkway in Lewiston, 784-4023. Online condolences and sharing of memories may be expressed at www.lynchbrothers.com .
