Albert Laquesnoy Strong, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, friend and coach passed away on Friday, September 2, at Clover Health Care. He resided at 143 Mill St. in Auburn, until moving to Clover Health Care Assisted Living in August of 2010. Albert was born in Eltham, England the son of Ebenezer and Elizabeth Strong. He remained in England until he joined the British Royal Navy in 1937. He was a Petty Officer and cook during his career in the navy. During his service in the Navy, World War II broke out and his travels took him to such places as the Arctic, Middle East, Far East, Africa and the United States. While stationed on numerous naval ships he had the pleasure of shaking the hands of Prime Minister Winston Churchill and King George VI. He was stationed in Auburn, Maine for a short time where he met his future wife, Muriel Cecile Lambert. They were married on November 4, 1944 and remained married for 64 years. He was honorably discharged from the navy in 1948 at which time he returned to the U.S. to raise his family. His career included working as a cook at the DeWitt Hotel, the Elm Hotel, Bates College and Friends Catering. He also worked for Judkins Laundry and retired after 25 years from Union Water Power Co. He was very active in community organizations. A past President of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Past State and Post Commander of the Canadian Legion, Past Exalted Ruler of the Lewiston Lodge of Elks, and member of the Lewiston Emblem Club. He was also a volunteer for many years at Togus V.A. Hospital and for 17 years a volunteer with the March of Dimes Walk America. Because of both he and his wife’s dedication and inspiration as volunteers for the March of Dimes, an award was named after them. He coached the St. Dom’s boy’s soccer team for 14 years and was inducted into the St. Dom’s Sport’s Hall of Fame in 2009. He was a member of the Prince of Peace Parish. He is predeceased by his wife Muriel. He is survived by his children, Richard Strong and his wife, Jacqueline, Patricia Hall and Linda Andrews and her husband, James: his grandchildren, Michael Strong and his wife, Vanessa, Jill Turcotte and her husband, Michael, Matt Strong, Chad Hall, Brian Andrews, and Sean Andrews and his wife, Michelle; his great-grandchildren, Laken and Macy Turcotte, Maximillian and Dante Strong and Emily, Madeleine and Julia Andrews and Nylah Hall; he is also survived by one sister Rosie Strong, a nephews David Brown and Andrew and his wife Maria Strong, nieces Marion Bjorn and Joan and her husband Peter Goldsmith of England. Those who knew him will always remember that dry sense of humor, silly smile and the stories he told about England and his time spent in the navy. Thank you also to the staff at Clover Health Care for the care and support they provided to our dad.
