Richard C. Hewitt, Jr., of Langhorne, died on Saturday, January 8, 2011. Richard was born in Trenton, NJ to Sarah Mulrine Hewitt and Richard Charles Hewitt, Sr. He graduated high school early and then entered the U.S. Marine Corps at age 15 in an attempt to join his older classmates and friends in battle during World War II. After several months of honorable service, Richard's true age was discovered and he was sent home. He re-entered the War by way of the U.S. Navy when he turned 17 and served from 1944 until 1946. After the war, Richard graduated from Trenton State College and began teaching at Antheil Junior High school in Ewing N.J. He also took his family to England in 1958-59 where he served in a 2 year teacher exchange program. He later graduated from Rutgers University and University of Colorado. He earned a Masters in Education and a Doctorate of Arts. His field was Geo-Physics. Richard taught at Trenton State College for more than 30 years and was such a popular Professor that one sorority made him "Honorary Father" and then further embraced him as an honorary member. His life long love of education and learning fostered his continuous pursuit of knowledge and throughout his life he was awarded scholarships to study in areas all over the world. He was twice a Fulbright Scholar in the United Kingdom and in Africa and was a National Science Foundation Scholar five times . He was also an Arctic Institute of North America Scholar once. Dr. Hewitt believed in maintaining a sound mind and body and was an excellent athlete, still hiking and exercising into his eighties. He is survived by his loving wife, Sue Zimmerman Hewitt, with whom he joyously traveled around the world after his retirement from teaching. They also spent time living in New Jersey, Arizona , Florida and Pennsylvania over the last 25 years. He is further survived by four daughters, Arby Hewitt-Mulrine, Verneda Hewitt Townsend, Cynthia Efaw and Kathleen Heffle and their spouses. He will be sorely missed by his 8 grandchildren, their spouses and numerous great grandchildren; He leaves behind many cousins, nieces and nephews. He maintained contact with numerous friends and former students throughout the world. Family and friends are invited to call on Sunday, January 16th, from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m. at the James J. Dougherty Funeral Home, Inc., 2200 Trenton Rd., Levittown where his funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Interment is private.
