Our family is mourning the death of a wonderful man - a husband, father of two daughters, grandfather of five, and great-grandfather of eight. Richard H. Davis passed away at the age of 91, one day after celebrating his Valentine's Day birthday. Perhaps it was that Valentine's Day birthday that made him the most thoughtful, caring, loving man. He loved quietly, but strongly. He was our rock and cared for all of us in a very special way.
Richard retired from the Pennsbury School District after more than thirty years of teaching 9th and 10th grade math at the Charles Boehm building. Yes, it was great having a math teacher in the family (we always had the answers to the most difficult homework problems, thanks to him!). Music played an important role in Richard's life. He played the saxophone during his undergraduate days at Cornell University where he graduated with a degree in mathematics. He later obtained his master's degree in mathematics from Rutgers University. For many years he played the oboe with the Delaware Valley Philharmonic Orchestra and sang with his church choir until two years ago. He also sang with the Pennsbury Community Chorus for many years and a barbershop quartet. He had a beautiful tenor singing voice.
Richard was a Korean War Veteran, an avid reader, and loved solving Sudoku puzzles. He and his "lovely bride" (as he would call his wife of almost 67 years) enjoyed playing bridge and participated in several bridge clubs.
Surviving Richard are his wife, Barbara Davis of Fairless Hills, his daughter Barbara Pears of Mechanicsburg, PA, his daughter Ann Custer and husband Keith of Fairless Hills as well as five grandchildren, Kristen Wright and husband Kevin of Orlando, FL, Seth Custer and wife Julienne of Fairless Hills, Ryan Pears of Los Angeles, CA, Lauren Szczesny and husband Tom of Lakewood, CO and Talon Custer and wife Rachel of Newtown. He was affectionately called G-Pop by his eight great-grandchildren, Shane, Grayson, and Bella Wright, Cailin and Klara Custer, Sienna and Landon Custer and Eleanor Szczesny who loved him dearly.
The family will gather and celebrate Richard's life in a private memorial service and our hope is that all who knew and loved him will reflect upon the importance of family and caring for one another.
Charitable contributions in memory of Richard Davis can be made to the Pennsbury Scholarship Foundation by going to the PSF website or mailing a check to PO Box 338, 134 Yardley Avenue, Fallsington, PA 19058.
