Phyllis Jean Stewart, born in Buckhannon, West Virginia, passed away at the age of 91 on December 15, 2024, in Levittown, Pennsylvania. A formidable presence, Phyllis was celebrated as an absolute boss, a strong matriarch, and revered as Queen of her family. Quick-witted well into her later years, she was admired for her sharp intellect and vibrant personality.
Phyllis graduated from high school in 1951 and embarked on a distinguished career at Bell Telephone. Starting as a telephone operator in Philadelphia, she demonstrated an unmatched work ethic and determination, eventually rising to the position of service representative over her 35-year tenure.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Phyllis was a dedicated homemaker, known for her keen intelligence and engaging pastimes that included puzzles and piano. She was an avid gardener and a masterful cook, known especially for making the best fudge, which will be sorely missed this holiday season.
Her love for the beach led her to spend cherished moments in Beach Haven, Manahawkin, and Long Beach Island. Her favorite place was the community enriching Island Beach House where Phyllis enjoyed the welcoming atmosphere.
She enjoyed her country music, and was all about that southern twang.
Phyllis was predeceased by husband James Willard Stewart. Her family was central to her life. She leaves behind a loving daughter, Janeann Stewart, with whom she shared a dynamic and close relationship. She was a proud grandmother to Robert James Hopkins and Jason Andrew Hibbs, and a great-grandmother to Madilyn Grady and Ayden Hibbs. Phyllis was was also preceded in death by her sister, Joann Butcher.
Phyllis Stewart will be remembered as the glue that held her family together, her legacy marked by her resilience, love, and the joy she brought to those around her. Her family and friends will continue to honor her memory by living up to the values she championed throughout her remarkable life.
