Mary Alice Kanian (nee Allende), age 98 years, passed away peacefully on April 5, 2025, at Juniper Village. She was surrounded by loving family members.
Mary was born in Manhattan, New York City, to parents, Manuel and Maria Allende. She graduated from High School in 1947. Mary married in May 1949. After she married, Mary went on to establish a career as a homemaker for many years. while her children were young. She then attended beauty school and became a licensed manicurist, working at a local beauty parlor near her home in Queens, New York. Thereafter, she worked for several years on Broadway as a dresser (Pirates of Penzance, Fences) with her brother John. Her beloved husband, Charlie, drove her to work from their home in Queens to Manhattan when she worked on Broadway for over 10 years.
Mary loved home improvement projects and was a pioneer in the neighborhood in renovations – she had a completely finished basement where the family spent most of their time, a central air conditioning system, a skylight, and a basketball court in the backyard.
Mary was a member of the local Columbiettes organization.
Mary was devoted to her family as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. Mary was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Charles, who passed away too soon in 1998. She was also preceded in death by her parents Maria and Manuel, brothers, Gabriel, John and Albert, and her sister, Lucille. Mary was always very close with her siblings and their spouses (especially brother-in-law, Bill Mazzoli, and sister-in-law, Mamie Allende), and they were all very much a part of her life. She was also preceded in death by her daughter-in-law, Raquel Kanian.
Mary is survived by her three sons, Charles, Mark and Martin; daughter-in-law, Emma; grandchildren: Charles (Chuck) Kanian, Kathy Peters, Mark Andrew Kanian, Christopher Kanian, Eric Kanian, and Christina Ketabchi. She is also survived by her beautiful great grandchildren, who love her very much: Kylie, Julia, Jakey, Marcus, Ariana, Gabriella, Nicholas, Cyrus and Alice.
A viewing for Mary will be held Saturday, April 12, 2025 from 9:30 AM to 11:00 AM at James J. Dougherty Funeral Home, Inc., 2200 Trenton Road, Levittown, Pennsylvania 19056, followed by a funeral service She will be laid to rest at 12:00 PM at Newtown Cemetery, 16 N Chancellor St, Newtown, Pennsylvania 18940.
