James Michael Harrington Jr., otherwise known as “The Duke” or “Jimmy”, passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by his family on May 11, 2020. He was 80 years old. Jimmy was born in Philadelphia, PA on January 11, 1940 to James M. and Mary T. Harrington (nee Malloy). He was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Ann. He is survived by his sister, Maureen P. (Richard) O’Donnell and brother, Michael P. (Colleen) Harrington as well as his nieces and nephew, Christine, Richard, Meaghan, Maura, Shannon, and Mary, and great niece, Mary Kate.
He was a member of the class of 1958 from Father Judge High School. Jimmy was the founding member of the Alcoholic Anonymous Club, known as Life or Death, in Northeast Philadelphia. Jimmy, famously founded Life or Death with “a resentment and a coffee pot.” He dedicated his life to helping others in recovery and made some life-long friends.
Jimmy will be remembered for his ability to make people laugh. As one of Jimmy’s cousins said, “He was one of the funniest men on the planet”. Jimmy was his nieces and nephews’ biggest fan. He attended many of their events, whether it was a swim meet, baseball game, regatta, mock trial, or graduation. “The Duke” was everywhere. He was proud of them and told everyone about all of their accomplishments. Jimmy also had a love for the New Year’s Day Parade. He was known for his unparalleled ability to do the golden slipper. Jimmy was beloved by all who knew him. It was never more evident than in the last few weeks of his life. It was humbling to see the impact Jimmy had on others. The family would like to especially thank Huntingdon Valley Home Care and his aids Noreen, Diane, Christina, and Tina for the incredible care that they provided to Jimmy.
In respect of social distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic, a funeral mass and burial will be announced at a later date.
